DTF Printing vs Silkscreen — Which Should You Choose for Your Order?

You've got your design ready and your quantity locked in. Now comes the question almost every first-time customer asks us: silkscreen or DTF?
Both methods produce great results. But they're built for different jobs — and choosing the wrong one means either overpaying for a method your design doesn't need, or under-delivering on a design that deserves better. Here's how to tell them apart and pick the right one for your order.
What Is Silkscreen Printing?
Silkscreen printing is the most established method for custom t-shirts in Singapore. Ink is pushed through a mesh screen onto your garment, one colour at a time. Each colour in your design gets its own screen.
It's fast, durable, and produces prints that feel smooth against the fabric. The trade-off is colour limits: silkscreen works best with 1–4 solid colours. Gradients, photographs, and fine detailed artwork are harder to reproduce well.
What Is DTF Printing?
DTF stands for Direct to Film. Your artwork is printed in full colour onto a special clear film, then heat-pressed directly onto your garment. No colour limits, no separate screen for each colour, no setup fee.
DTF handles the jobs silkscreen finds difficult: full-colour designs, gradients, photographs, fine lines, and small text. It works equally well on white and dark-coloured garments, because the white layer is built into the transfer itself.
Science Centre Singapore used DTF with us for their full-colour printed tees — a good example of where the method shines.
DTF vs. Silkscreen vs. Heat Transfer
Here is how the three methods compare for common custom t-shirt orders in Singapore:
DTF: Unlimited colours. Best for complex, full-colour designs. Minimum 5 pieces. Works on dark fabrics without extra steps. Slight raised texture. High durability with proper care. From S$9.50/pc at 30 pcs.
Silkscreen: 1–4 colours per layer. Best for bold, simple designs at scale. Minimum 10 pieces. Works on dark fabrics with a white base layer added. Smooth, part of fabric. Very high durability. From S$8.00/pc at 30 pcs.
Heat Transfer: Unlimited colours. Best for small runs with full colour. Minimum 10 pieces. Works on dark fabrics. Feel depends on paper type. Moderate to high durability. Quote-based.

Choose DTF When…
Your design is full-colour, has gradients, or is a photograph
You need fine lines or small text that silkscreen can't hold cleanly
You're printing on a dark-coloured garment and want no colour compromise
You want individual personalisation — names or numbers that differ across pieces in the same order
You're ordering fewer than 30 pieces, where silkscreen setup costs don't make sense
DTF has a minimum of just 5 pieces, making it the go-to for class tee samples, small-run orders, and personalised gifts.
Choose Silkscreen When…
Your design is bold and uses 1–3 solid colours
You're ordering 50 pieces or more, where the per-piece cost drops significantly
Cost is the top priority and the design allows for it
You want the smoothest possible feel — silkscreen ink becomes part of the fabric rather than sitting on top of it
For school CCAs, company events, and sports clubs ordering in bulk, silkscreen is usually the most cost-effective choice.
A Real Example
A student committee organising class tees with a full-colour sunset illustration across the back came to us unsure which method to use. The design had 12 colours and a gradient sky. Silkscreen would have required multiple screens and struggled with the gradient. We recommended DTF — the print came out exactly as the artwork, at 30 pieces, at S$9.50 per piece.
If the same committee had a simple 2-colour design — a text name on the front and a small logo on the back — silkscreen would have been the better and cheaper call.
