DTF vs Screen Printing Singapore — Which Method Is Right for Your Order?

If you've been searching for custom t-shirt printing in Singapore, you've probably seen both DTF printing and screen printing come up. The names sound similar, the results can look similar — but they're built for different jobs.
This guide breaks down the real differences so you can choose the right method for your order: when each method works, when it doesn't, and what it will cost you.
What Is Screen Printing?
Screen printing — also called silkscreen printing — is the most widely used method for custom t-shirts in Singapore. Ink is pushed through a mesh screen, one per colour, directly onto the garment. Each layer is cured with heat.
The result is a smooth, vibrant print that feels like part of the fabric. The trade-off: every colour in your design needs its own screen. More colours means more setup work and more cost at low quantities.
Screen printing works best for bold designs with 1 to 3 solid colours, large orders where setup cost is spread across many pieces, and jobs where the softest possible print feel matters.
What Is DTF Printing?
DTF stands for Direct to Film. Your artwork is printed in full colour onto a special PET film, coated with a hot-melt adhesive powder, then heat-pressed onto the garment. When the film peels away, you get a flexible, full-colour print bonded firmly to the fabric.
Because the print goes onto film first — not directly onto the garment — DTF handles complexity that screen printing struggles with: gradients, photographs, fine lines, and unlimited colours in one pass. No screen setup, no per-colour cost.
DTF works best for full-colour designs and gradients, small orders from 5 pieces up, dark-coloured garments, and orders with personalisation such as different names or numbers across pieces.
DTF vs Screen Printing Singapore — Side by Side
Colours: DTF handles unlimited colours in one pass. Screen printing requires one screen per colour, which adds cost for complex designs.
Minimum order: DTF starts from 5 pieces. Screen printing typically starts from 10 pieces.
Setup fee: DTF has no setup fee. Screen printing has a setup cost per colour, which makes small runs expensive.
Dark fabrics: Both work well. DTF's white layer handles dark garments cleanly without extra steps.
Print feel: Screen printing ink becomes part of the fabric — smooth and soft. DTF sits on the surface with a slight raised texture, flexible and durable.
Cost at 30 pieces, 1 colour: screen printing from S$8.00/pc, DTF from S$9.50/pc.
Cost at 30 pieces, full-colour design: DTF from S$9.50/pc (same rate regardless of colour count). Screen printing cost rises significantly — each extra colour adds a setup charge.
When Screen Printing Wins
Screen printing is the better call when your design is simple — a company name, a logo, 1 to 3 colours. It is also the right choice when you are ordering 50 pieces or more and cost per piece is the priority, or when you want the flattest, softest feel against the fabric.
For school CCAs, company events, and sports clubs printing a simple logo at volume, screen printing will usually cost less per piece at scale.
When DTF Printing Wins
DTF is the better call when your design is full-colour, has gradients, or is a photograph. It also wins when you are printing fewer than 30 pieces where screen setup costs eat into your budget, when you need personalised pieces with unique names or numbers per shirt, or when you are printing on dark-coloured garments and want no colour compromise.
Science Centre Singapore used DTF printing with us for their event tees — a design with multiple colours and fine detail that screen printing would have struggled to reproduce cleanly.
A Real Example
A student group came to us needing 30 class tees with a full-colour design: a gradient background, a photo-style illustration, and small text. Screen printing would have needed 4 to 5 screens, raising the cost significantly and still producing an imperfect result on the gradient.
We recommended DTF. The print came out exactly as the artwork, at 30 pieces, at S$9.50 per piece. No setup fee, no colour compromises.
If the same group had a simple 2-colour text-and-logo design, screen printing at the same quantity would have been the cheaper, equally clean choice.
